The Rolled Hem

The single most important miniature finish — replaces bulky turned hems on chiffon, silk, and lining.

Follow the written steps below in the meantime.

  1. 01

    Trim the raw edge straight

Use sharp embroidery scissors. A clean edge is non-negotiable — frayed wisps will ruin the roll.

  2. 02

Apply a thread-line of fray check

Drag a single bead 1 mm from the cut edge. Let dry 60 seconds before handling.

  3. 03

Roll the edge between thumb and finger

Working in 10 mm sections, twist the edge into a tight tube. The roll should be roughly 1.5 mm wide.

  4. 04

    Whip-stitch from the inside

Catch one ply of the rolled tube and one ply of the garment, every 1.5 mm. Stitches should not show on the face.

  5. 05

    Steam, do not press

A hover-steam relaxes the thread without flattening the roll. Pressing kills the dimension.
